The Yad is a pointer that guides the eye as it makes it way through a Torah portion. In this picture, we see two yads, because yad also means hand in Hebrew. From a poetic standpoint, one could caption this photo "hand in hand" and it would be a fitting metaphor: the young, hopeful hand of the Bat Mitzvah is guided by the traditions passed along to her by her parents, rabbis and community.
