Cartagena Wedding Photographer Santa Clara HotelA backlit veil can be so beautiful, especially when photographed against a darker colored background. For this destination wedding, photographed in Cartagena, Colombia, the bride and groom chose to do a day-after session, which helped us capture more of the local charm than we would have otherwise been able to. This image was taken at the Hotel Sofitel Santa Clara, which is in the historic part of Cartagena. This hotel used to be a convent, but it is now one of the best properties in the area. Two toucans live in the central atrium, and are tame enough that they might visit your table while you are eating breakfast (especially if you have fruit on the table). The hotel itself features antique furniture and rust-colored walls, which make for dramatic photos infused with color. A beautiful old stairway towards the back of the property features a high window, and at a certain time of day, the sun streams directly through this window, enabling photographers to create dramatic back-lit photographs. For this photo, I asked my bride to move her cathedral-length veil up and down, as slowly as possible. The sun caught the fabric beautifully, and I love the end result.
